Sky Flow: Albany Pine Bush Preserve Sunrise Time Lapse

Sky Flow: Sunrise Time Lapse, Albany Pine Bush Preserve

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a unique and ecologically important natural area. Spanning over 3,200 acres, this preserve offers a varied landscape of rolling sand dunes, pine-scrub forests, and wildflower meadows. Notably, it stands as one of the few remaining inland pine barrens ecosystems in the world, hosting a diverse range of rare and endangered plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else. The preserve's dynamic habitats are shaped by fire ecology, with controlled burns playing a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of this ecosystem.

Lunar Spectrum

Lunar Spectrum (2023)

The moon's appearance can change color due to a phenomenon called "lunar or moon illusion." This effect is primarily caused by the moon's position relative to the horizon, the Earth's atmosphere, and our perception of size. When the moon is near the horizon, it appears larger and can take on a reddish or orange hue due to the Earth's atmosphere scattering shorter wavelengths of light, like blue and green, while allowing longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, to pass through and reach our eyes. This gives the moon a warm, colorful glow. As the moon rises higher in the sky, it appears smaller, and the color may return to its usual white or gray appearance.

Skylight: Delta Aquariid Meteor

Skylight: a Delta Aquariid meteor passes over the forests of the Rensselaer Plateau at Petersburg, New York.

The Delta Aquariid meteor shower is an annual event that occurs from late July to mid-August. It is considered one of the most impressive meteor showers of the year. The meteor shower is caused by debris left behind by the comet 96P/Machholz, which orbits the Sun about every 5.3 years.

During its peak, the Delta Aquariid meteor shower can produce around 20 to 30 meteors per hour under dark and clear skies. These meteors appear to originate from the constellation Aquarius, which is how the meteor shower got its name.

The Subtle and Complex Colors of the Milky Way

The subtle but complex colors of the Milky Way over Martin Dunham Reservoir in Grafton Lakes State Park.

The Milky Way gets its color from the combination of various stars and celestial objects that emit different wavelengths of light. The Milky Way is composed of billions of stars, along with interstellar gas and dust. The colors we see in the Milky Way are a result of the different temperatures and compositions of these stars and the interaction of their light with the surrounding interstellar matter.

Blue stars are typically hotter than red stars and emit more blue and ultraviolet light. Red stars, on the other hand, emit more red and infrared light. When we observe the Milky Way, the collective light from these stars creates a blend of colors, ranging from blue, white, and yellow to red. Additionally, interstellar dust can scatter and absorb light, affecting its color appearance. The result is the beautiful spectrum of colors that appears in photographs over a certain exposure time.

Ghost Dams and Their Impacts

Fireflies Illuminate a Forgotten Ghost Dam in Grafton, New York

It's not a term you hear often: ghost dam.

Ghost dams refer to abandoned or decommissioned dams and mills that have been left without proper maintenance or removal. These hidden locations are often concealed by years of overgrowth and neglect, harboring secrets of the past. In New York State, there are hundreds of these decaying structures, silently impacting the ecological, hydrological, and cultural futures of the communities that once relied on them for industrial purposes.

Ghost dams, mills, and other decommissioned structures can disrupt natural water flows, causing changes in downstream ecosystems. These altered flow patterns have consequences for aquatic habitats, fish migration, and the overall water availability of various species. Additionally, ghost mills may have altered the landscape, resulting in habitat structure changes and affecting the local flora and fauna. This disruption of natural water flows can lead to flooding events and river fragmentation, ultimately limiting biodiversity.

Abandoned dams and mills pose water quality issues. The accumulation of sediment behind ghost dams traps pollutants, altering nutrient levels and affecting downstream water quality. Furthermore, many of these neglected sites may contain chemicals and waste that further exacerbate the environmental concerns.
While there is no straightforward solution to these remnants of a bygone era, it is crucial to acknowledge and understand their impacts. Raising awareness about the ecological, hydrological, and cultural consequences of ghost dams and mills can help initiate conversations and actions toward preserving and restoring our rivers and waterways. #FreeTheRivers
