John Bulmer Photography on New York Upstate

Big thanks to NYup.com for sharing my image of the New York State Capitol with their half-million followers. Promoting New York State, especially Upstate, with photography is one of my favorite subjects.

Reclaimed Cities 2023 | Collection 2.0

9 years ago I created a series of images of imagining what the landmarks of the Capital District would look like in the absence of humans. The series was called Reclaimed Cities and it was more popular than I could have ever imagined. They were featured on 2 television networks, radio, and web media outlets. The images eventually turned into viral content receiving thousands of social media shares and making their way across the country.

By design, I never created a narrative about them, they were meant for individual interpretation. Some people saw zombies, some people inferred climate change, and others saw pandemic. Covid 19 changed the meaning of the photos when we all became accustomed to abandoned cities.

They were one of the most popular stores of 2014 on All Over Albany and the original images still receive shares today. Technology has progressed tremendously since the first images. Wanting to see what's possible, I have created Reclaimed CIties 2023. The detail, definition, and structure possible today are incredible compared to 2014.

Distant Points of Light | 01.18.2023

Distant Points of Light | Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) over Upstate New York
01.18.2023

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was discovered on March 22, 2022 by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at the California Institute of Technology. The comet is believed to be a long-period comet, meaning it has an orbital period of 200 years or more. It was first observed when it was about 6.5 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun and is currently on its way towards the inner solar system. At the time of discovery, the comet was given a magnitude of around 18, which means it was quite faint and difficult to observe. However, as the comet gets closer to the Sun and Earth, it may become more visible to telescopes and potentially even to the naked eye.

Sunrise in Easton, New York

Sunrise in Easton, New York.

At the beginning and end of the day, the sun’s light must travel through much more atmosphere to reach your eyes. The additional atmosphere, and particulates in it, scatter the longer wavelengths of red, orange, and yellow, sometimes producing dramatic results. While I can’t prove October brings the most intense light shows of the year, here is a strong argument for that.
