Behan Communications Artist's Profile | 09.10.2022

AN ARTIST’S JOURNEY: Regular Facing Out readers know John Bulmer. He’s been a designer and art director, a commercial and documentary photographer, and a fine artist. Now he is a creator blending of all those roles. “Over the course my career, I have come to realize that all art is built on the same principles of composition and color. Only the mechanics change as the media change,” John said.

Adaptation is essential in any creative pursuit, and John is continuously finding new ways to innovate, build narrative and tell stories for clients and causes that he seeks to promote, such as the protection of public lands and the conservation of fragile ecosystems.

He has designed software interfaces and consumer spaces, illustrated books, and designed packaging and websites. As a commercial photographer, John’s work has been seen around the world.

Recently, John has turned to mixed media painting, producing drawings and paintings of the landscapes he once captured with a camera. “The paintings are a way for me to slow down and enjoy the process again,” he said. “Over the past 25 years, I have captured millions of photos in an industry that relies on the fast turnaround of thousands of images on a tight deadline. Painting allows me to slow it all down and produce one deliberate thing at a time. For me, in 2022, art is the process of making something beautiful or thought-provoking, the tools used don’t matter so much anymore. It can be with an AI, a computer, a camera, or a paintbrush.”

New York Times | 10.06.2021

Of all the bylines I have had over my career, a New York Times byline means the most. I am honored to be part of a long tradition of amazing photographers and photojournalists who have been published in the Times.

Story: You Got Lost and Had to Be Rescued. Should You Pay?

The coronavirus pandemic sent a surge of inexperienced hikers into the wilderness. Many ran into trouble. Now states are looking to bill them for costly search and rescue operations.

Time Capsules | COVID-19 | Saratogian Newspaper

I have been a professional photographer for over two decades. My photojournalism has been published across the country and in Europe. None of those images have meant as much as the one included in this story in Saratogian about the impacts school closures are having on students. I never thought I would publish a news image with my daughter as the subject. For me, it’s an image that has come to represent everything about COVID-19. Of the millions of exposures I’ve captured, I’ll never forget this one. It’s of a kid who cares deeply about school, her teachers, and her friends packing up her locker, which is now a time capsule of the world before. That was a world of basketball games, art projects, and school dances. It was a time before masks and gloves, charts tracking infection rates, and daily task force briefings. It was a world before we all lived in boxes in Zoom meetings and interacted in six-foot spheres.

As parents, we reinforce that caring in our children. What we don’t prepare them for something like COVID-19 that puts all those things we tell our kids to care about in a state of limbo. Not just one project, or event, or game. ALL of them. There is no reference guide to prepare them for things left unfinished. When I snapped this photo, there were so many uncertainties. There still are. We have learned so much since then, but we’ve lost much more.

I do hope they get to open their time capsules this school year.

John Bulmer Photography
in the June 2011 New York State Conservationist

[Above] John Bulmer Photography has 2 images in the June 2011 New York State Conservationist's feature More Than a Working Forest.

More Than a Working Forest outlines New York State's 2010 acquisition of 89,000 acres as a working forest easement. I am again honored to be included in such a publication. I feel strongly about the preservation of open and wild spaces. Each year I spend countless days in the Adirondack backcountry hiking, climbing, and shooting images like the ones above. I look forward to exploring these newly acquired lands.

In the Press: 5 Questions with John Bulmer

Five Questions for April 2, 2011: John Bulmer
Published: Saturday, April 02, 2011, Troy Record

By Danielle Sanzone

John Bulmer is a photographer, designer, and owner of John Bulmer: Photography & New Media Development. Originally from Troy, he attended Troy High School, The College of Saint Rose, and Russell Sage College. He has degrees in art/design and history. He is currently building a house in Saratoga County for his family including his wife, Kristen, and daughter, Ava.

Q: What do you do with the Photography and New Media Development business?

A: I create various visuals for all sorts of applications. As a photographer, I have shot in all sorts of conditions and situations. I shoot weddings, commercial work, mountain bike and road cycling races, portraits, and fine art landscapes. As a new media designer, I work in all aspects of Web page creation, and brand development. My roles as designer and photographer often overlap. That's the fun part. It's very satisfying having the capability to integrate my photography into compelling, successful design. I started my business in 1999 and I'm located in Saratoga County.

Q: Any favorite projects thus far?

A: I love everything about photography. Life is never boring with a camera nearby. But, my favorite photo project so far is getting the cover of the February 2011 issue of the New York State Conservationist for the Year of Forests. For design, I often work with a film director from Colorado designing materials for his climbing and mountaineering documentaries. On both counts, it's a pleasure to be able to integrate the things I love into my work life.

Q: What is included in the New Media Development aspect?

A: Developing new ways to use traditional visuals. This often includes social media like Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. My Web site is www.bulmerphotography.com.

Q: Hobbies?

A: Reading, running, hiking, blogging, photography, cycling.

Q: If you had to pick between a keg and eggs, what would you pick?

A: I have been a vegan since 1990 and enjoy craft beer. So, keg all the way.
