Full Moon Over the Taconic Crest | February 2022

Full Moon Over the Taconic Crest | February 2022
Petersburg, New York

Note: I never released this image from February. It’s the full moon rising over the Taconic Crest in Rensselaer County. While I’m looking forward to the warmer weather and the storms it brings, winter is beautiful and one of the subjects I enjoy documenting most.

Sunrise Over the Geyser Creek Island Spouter | 01.12.2022

Sunrise over the Geyser Creek Island Spouter | 01.12.2022

Many refer to this naturally spouting spring as a geyser, however, a geyser only occurs when heat is involved. Geysers are propelled out of the earth by pressurized steam. Saratoga’s spouters, whose temperatures range between 48 and 56 degrees Fahrenheit, are pushed to the earth’s surface by pressurized carbonic gas.

The island is made from colorful tufa rock and larger over time as minerals from the spring water are deposited. The minerals in the tufa will cover leaves, rocks, and anything else that falls into the spring. Different minerals give the tufa its many colors. The reds and oranges common in the park’s formations come from iron.

On quiet winter nights in the mountains, it’s almost like you can hear the hum of the planet spinning at almost 1,000 miles per hour.

The Earth turns on its own axis about once every 24 hours (or, to be precise, every 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds). Earth measures 24,898 miles (40,070 kilometers) in circumference, so when you divide distance by time, that means the planet is spinning 1,037 mph ( 1,670 km/h).
